A daily prayer from the New England Conference
Members of the New England Conference Extended Cabinet are sharing a daily prayer based on the Revised Common Lectionary for the week.
You are welcome to use these in worship or in your own devotions.
Today's Prayer
Holy God,
how easy it is to deflect the words of your prophets,
choosing to believe they were intended only for an ancient people in a far-off land. Yet, the words disturb my conscience
and compel me to question whether my own religiosity
reeks of convenient faith
rather than sacrificial discipleship.
If I have congratulated myself for
my regular worship attendance,
my generous offerings,
my commendable conduct,
if I have masqueraded behind my piety,
if I have worn sanctimony like a badge of honor,
then convict me of my offensive pride.
Grant me the introspection and the humility to be honest with you
and with myself. Call me once again to
do good;
seek justice;
help the oppressed;
defend the orphan;
plead for the widow. Enable me to be a willing and obedient disciple
and to commit myself fully to a gospel that comforts the afflicted
and afflicts the comfortable.
Rev. Arlene M. Tully, Many Waters District Superintendent Based on Isaiah 1:10-20
