A daily prayer during this COVID-19 crisis

During these difficult days, members of the Green Mountain District of the New England Conference are sharing a daily prayer based on the Revised Common Lectionary for the week.

You are welcome to use these in worship or in your own devotions.

Today’s prayer Genesis 32: 22-31

God, we are grateful that you are willing to wrestle with us in these challenging days and nights. Sometimes we are so frustrated that we don’t know where to turn. Sometimes the grief descends on our hearts and we don’t know how to lighten up, or even if we should try. There is immense pain all around us. There is brokenness in the most intimate relationships as well as in the larger world. We are finding it hard to trust anyone, even ourselves. Sometimes, we don’t even trust you. We want things to be easier in this human life. We want to pray and have our prayers answered – illnesses healed, relationships knit back together, poverty eliminated, grief turned to joy. We are impatient. We are the people of fast food, quick solutions and speedy religion. But some things take time. Some things take longer than we think we can stand. Some problems cannot be solved, even when we try really hard to figure them out. Sometimes, wrestling with you all night is what we need to do – not because we might grapple our way to a solution, but because it is necessary to exhaust ourselves. It is the only way to wear out this determination we have of achieving our goals on our own steam. Sometimes wrestling all night with you is what it takes for true healing to begin. Only after we have been wounded can grace come in through the brokenness. Only then, can we receive your blessing and the hope of a new tomorrow. May this blessing come upon us, and may we be ready to receive this new day. Amen. May it be so.
