A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, May 4

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

All of us who read this today are extravagantly rich in comparison to many in other parts of the world today. We are in a position to do so much good. We are not held back by poverty, hunger, lack of resources. For these reasons, I must keep in mind the ever-present needs of others, both material and emotional. I am in a position to do a lot of good for others. Holding on to my money (or my time) does not lead to any good.

Father God, Open my eyes to opportunities to be generous with my wealth, in ways that are pleasing to you. Amen

Becky, transforming

God never condemned the rich. He only asked that we share our wealth with those less fortunate. The wealth doesn’t have to be financial. God is asking us to do the same. It can be time spent with others, a smile and or just a happy hello. In this way, we are doing what God asks…

Reports on lottery winners show that in many cases the wealth ruins their lives. Wealth can focus a person on everything but God. Even when they use some money to help others, it is done to great fanfare and praise that is a distraction from the help offered. Wealth used anonymously for the good of others…

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Generosity, we see in this letter to Timothy, is part of “the life that is truly life.” Sharing one’s wealth brings benefit to the recipient and joy to the giver. When one looks at the super-rich, the claim that wealth is uncertain seems empty, but we are all but one economic, sociopolitical or personal health catastrophe from financial ruin. Our treasure in heaven, however is incorruptible. Typical of how Jesus turned the world upside down, we build that treasure by giving our earthly treasure when we see a need to be filled. The dollar won’t purchase a single thing in heaven.

Prayer - Generous God, loosen my hand when it comes to sharing what I have been…

1 Timothy 6:17–19 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money for good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so they may experience true life. We are surrounded by extreme wealth in this world. Billionaires are in the news almost every day spending their billions on one outlandish thing or another. Yes, some are…
