A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, March 27

Colossians 2:18

Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up by idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

Verse 19 should probably have been included here as well. "They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow." I think Paul is reminding us to hold close why we believe what we believe. Others may use academic-sounding arguments to try to lead us away. But we also use our minds to remember all that has been shown to us through scripture. We do not just hold on to a blind faith for no reason. We need our minds to make sense of it all, and likewise those who do not believe may try to lure us away.

Holy Lord, this is something I can fall victim to from time to time. A very well-written, persuasive argument can shake me a bit. But ultimately it is my mind and my knowledge of scripture (along with the Holy Spirit) which lead me right back to you. I thank you for this healthy mind. Amen

Colossians 2:18

In today’s world we meet lots of,people who have some strict rules for their worship and beliefs. They feel as,if there is only one way to worship God—their way. Then there are those who don’t worship or believe anything and think less of those of us who do. But we know, through study, worship, and discussion that this book (Bible) written thousands of years ago contains so much knowledge and wisdom that we try to live according to it today.

Prayer: Gracious God, may we never be led away from you by those whose ideas do not include your word. Amen

COLOSSIANS 2:18

Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

I am confused about this passage but I have tried to  understand it. This is what I think it means. Don’t let anyone declare you wrong  when you  refuse to worship angels, as they say you must. They have seen their own visions and know you should do the same.  These proud people (though they claim to be humble)have a very clever imagination. But they are not connected to Christ, the head…

Colossians 2:18

I was not sure of the meaning of today’s verse, but Becky’s post was very helpful. As I reconsider the verse I am reminded of the Methodist Quadrilateral which holds that we approach Scripture through the elements of reason, tradition and experience. There are certainly those whose faith is “blind” in this sense, but to tar all believers as naive, unthinking automatons as so many self-important skeptics do, reveals their ignorance. The intellect of these dismissive unbelievers is embarrassingly puny in the shadow of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Barth, Niebuhr, Chesterton, Bonhoeffer, CS Lewis, NT Wright and countless others over the centuries. True Christianity is not a crude and primitive belief system, but one that deeply…
