A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, April 13

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

I wouldn’t think of the word “balance” immediately after reading this verse. But when I look again, it makes sense. God created us to live our earthly lives here, in this world. But we are often reminded not to be of this world. How am I to keep that balance? I think the answer lies with the Holy Spirit. If I allow the Holy Spirit to guide me in all I do, I will keep that balance. I will be living in the world as a Christian, and that is all God asks of me.

Holy One, Help me to listen for you through the day. Help me to live a Christian’s day today, as a Christian Pilgrim, seeking you always. Amen

I think balance in this verse means living life on an even keel. If I do everything with Jesus in mind, then I will be content in knowing that I am following his teaching. I won’t feel guilty, or anxious or regretful, because I would not have sinned, except by thought.

Dear Lord, if what I think is considered a sin, then along with the occasional word, I have much work to do. Word like these from Paul are the support that I need. Thank you. Amen.

Colossians 3:17

Well, let's start out with our favorite scripture James 4:8 come near to God and he will come near to you. The more the word of Christ dwells within us, the greater we will change and live out these qualities . In reading his word along with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit we know right from wrong and turn from what is evil and concentrate only on what is good. Non-believers think they are doing what is right before God, but do not know his word and often blame their shame on others. That is why it is important that I/we continue to be actively involved within a body of believers who will he…

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the father. I’m not sure I see balance, as I understand it in this reading, the first line is what I will focus on, when Paul says “whatever“ he means everything we do – from our workplace, to our commute, to our home. Although we don’t, or shouldn’t, preach at our workplace, those around us should know we are Christians by all that we do and say. At home, the same is true. Being thankful that we have a home and can provide for families is important. To me, all of this is being an example of one who…

Definition of Balance in relationship to the Bible is being what Scripture teaches, letting the message control our lives and prioritize what we are doing. So, when Paul tells me to do all in the name of Jesus, he is telling me that I should attempt to reflect Christ’s image in all that I do. If I can go through my day without being ashamed of what I have done, then I am honoring God and mirroring Christ’s teaching.

Dearest Lord, help me to always balance my day and keep my…

Colossians 3:17

“And whatever you do . . .” All we are, all we have and all we are able to do are gifts from God. Returning those things back to God restores the spiritual balance that sin and it’s ringmaster tries to upset in our everyday life. Regardless of our station in life, every day presents a choice to sin or to serve God. By consciously dedicating whatever we do to God, the right choice is made and Satan is denied.

Prayer - Sovereign God, source of all, let my every thought and action be one that puts You at the helm of the ship of my life. Guide me to do all in the name of the Lord…
