A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, May 16

Galatians 1:10

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Again I am amazed at how similar we are as a people today, to the people of this first century. Paul admonishes the early church for going in the wrong direction, following faulty teaching. Why is it we are so easily influenced? When we follow a bad idea, we allow others to encourage and influence us. Yet we know what is right, and what is wrong. There is comfort in the company, I suppose. But it cannot be compared to the comfort of following God, which is eternal.

Holy One, May I always choose you over all other paths. Your comfort is eternal. Amen

Galations 1:10

Obviously, I’m not trying to ruin the approval of the people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.

I read many translations of this verse and I like the NLT best. It uses the word obviously. There is no mistaking his intent with that word.. Paul wrote this approximately 49AD, and it’s words are just as important today. He was trying to get the Galations back on track and it was probably hard for them to hear. As Christ’s servant, his job was to serve God not please the Galatians as if all were well. They needed to hear the cold hard truth.

Prayer: gracious God, we all want to…

Galatians 1:10

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Being a people pleaser caused a lot of unhappiness in my life. I wanted to please others so I would be well liked. Boy what stinking thinking that was. I have learned that spending all my time pleasing other people leads to stress because someone else was trying to run my life. It is sad, that it has taken me so long to recognize when to say no to people and yes to God. The Holy Spirit is helpi…

Galatians 1:10 To be considered a “people-pleaser” can have both positive and negative connotations. Such a quality that reveals the fruit of the Spirit generally pleases people, but always pleases God. Such a quality that always bends to every wish of other people to the point of dishonoring God earns nothing but contempt from people, even those who take advantage of this lack of principles, and grieves our Creator. The more excellent path seems obvious.

Prayer - Gracious God, in my interactions with others, may any people-pleasing I do stem from the fact that I have been adopted into Your family. May I consistently represent the values and precepts that please You first, whether or not they please other people. Amen
