hebrews 10:36–39Like Tom, I am intrigued by the use of patience and perseverance in these verses. I see someone patiently waiting for things. Happy and knowing they will happen eventually. But to me, perseverance is teeth gritting, hanging on, and stubbornly never giving up. I’m not sure which best explains what Paul is saying about Christ’s coming. I guess after 2000+ years perseverance is the word.Prayer: Gracious God, May I live by faith as I wait with all believers for the final salvation. Amen
For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
Paul explains that Jesus will return and will not delay, so we should live in a way that we are ready and expecting His return. We shall live by faith, which simply means living by faith…
36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
Patience has never been my strong point. Waiting for someone or something to come to me on time had always bothered me. As I grow in my faith and learn about Jesus, I have developed more patience. I have learned that my time and God’s time frame are not the same. Instantaneous results are not part of God’s plan. I wait, and sometimes I am disappointed and sometimes I am not but knowing that it’s what God wants for me is key to my understanding of the promise of eternal life.
As in yesterday’s verse, the concept of patience is presented in the word, “perseverance.” Perseverance conveys to me a more focused and dedicated kind of patience. The patience to wait in line at the grocery is related to but very different from the perseverance to rise above the problem of substance abuse to sobriety in oneself or in a loved one. Scriptural patience, as modeled by Jesus, is the ideal to which we all should strive. I fail miserably more times that I can count, but with practice at the grocery, I may learn the basics necessary to call upon perseverance when I really need it.
