A Daily Devotion for Thursday, January 4

Luke 14:28

"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?"

Jesus wanted people to think about the cost of following Him. What would it take, and what might need to be given up or paid to stay the course? The stakes were high, and maybe some of Jesus' followers did not realize just how high. Most all of us reading and thinking about this verse this morning have set the goal to follow Jesus. It is easier for us because we don't face the physical peril. But it is also easier for us to stray away and lose sight of our goal. I am not constantly (physically) reminded of my promise to follow Jesus. This make it too easy for me to forget from time to time, and fall into the world.

Holy Lord, help me to remember my promise to live for you, following Jesus and his teachings. Every day, every minute and every moment, is yours. Amen

Luke 14:28

When the first disciples heard the words, “follow me,” they left their nets and did just that! No preparation, no goal setting, just a hunger to find out more about this man, Jesus. Perhaps the goal setting in this verse is for us. Do we understand the cost of discipleship? There are places in this world where the costs are great—even life threatening. We do not face such threats, but there is a cost. Non believers discourage and disparage us. We give of our time, talents, and possessions. I don’t think any of us thought about the cost as we were brought up as Christians from childhood. Our goal is to simply follow Jesus’ example a…

Luke 14:28

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

One of the best habits we can do in our lives is to finish what we start( Becky spoke about this in our zoom meeting) Jesus gave great advise in the form of a question when he asked his disciples this above scripture. What were they willing to do for Jesus. In our ability to finish what we start we have to have a plan to see it through to completion. This would give us a sense of purpose and accomplishment in life. I know whenever I start any sew…

Luke 14:28 I do not seek persecution, but I read every month about faith that cannot be broken and is in fact strengthened by persecution. This month’s issue of Voice of the Martyrs is entirely devoted to believers in North Korea. If the cost of being a follower of Jesus were to become that high in this country would I be willing to pay it? I know what the “right” answer is, but when a radically progressive US government outlaws orthodox Christianity but allows a fake state sanctioned “church,” confiscates Bibles, bulldozes the buildings of “intolerant” churches and imprisons traditionalist clergy, only then will I truly know if I have counted the cost and am prepared to pay it.
