A Daily Devotion For Thursday, February 17

Psalm 23:6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

When I looked up this verse in my own bible today, I was surprised to see the word “love” where I expected “mercy”. I checked a couple of other translations and both words are used. Is it fair to say these two words are nearly identical in meaning? Or is it closer to say both words come near to the meaning of the original word used in Psalm 23? In any event, God’s love for me leads to his merciful treatment of me. His love for me leads to my inclusion in the sphere of Christian faith, and in the promises of Christ Jesus. I am thankful beyond words for God’s mercy.

Heavenly Father, your mercy and love are everything to me. You are, of course, my world. May I be more merciful and more loving to others, at every opportunity. Amen

Psalm 23: 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

I am learning so much from these Bible readings. For those of us who know Jesus, we have this never-ending relationship that is marked by goodness and loyal love. We have the promise that Jesus will never leave us, and we are assured of his goodness and mercy. It is a guarantee that if we trust Jesus, we will be with the Good Shepherd forever. Not just in this life but in eternity.

Dearest Lord, your mercy is renewed with each day. I thank you for the grace that you give to…

Psalm 23:6

I learned this scripture in Sunday School and I memorized it. Like so many that are memorized, I tend to read them without thinking about their meaning. So many verses in this Psalm brings comfort and peace each time you read them. These verses remind me God wants to lead me to a place of rest, a place of trust, a place of confidence, a place where I rely on Him and focus on Him without anything that will distract me. God is love, I could never say these words enough. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the lord forever. Lord, Help m…

Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me……. As I read Psalm 23:6, I inserted mercy instead of unfailing love as my Bible had given me. Although I memorized Psalm 23 and many others as a child, I often miss the language of a favorite passage from the KJV. I see this change as a good one. If you really want to understand what mercy is, here it is loud and clear – unfailing love. May we remember that this unfailing love is offered us and it is there for us to give as well. Prayer: Gracious God, As I accept your unfailing love, may I also offer it to those who may need it. Amen

Psalm 23:6

This verse concludes a hymn of praise, lauding God’s provision, protection, restoration, comfort and compassion. All these are manifestations of the mercy we are shown in a world of want, shadowy paths, evil and enemies. Why would anyone choose to walk this valley of the shadow of death without God?This is a sad mystery of modern life, but one that the lives of believers can gently, yet firmly push back against.

Prayer - Merciful God, I give thanks for Your presence in the storms of life, assuring me that all will end in goodness and mercy. Help me to point others to that assurance expressed by Psalm 23. Amen
