Ephesians 4:25, 29
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up others according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Sometimes people say hurtful things because it is "the truth". But the truth is not always helpful and does not always encourage or build up another. In those cases, we remember the old saying,"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Even though this saying is not directly biblical, it incorporates both of these verses. Ephesians 4-25 & 4:29
It amazes me that even thousands of years ago people needed to be told not to lie and use foul or abusive language. But we need that advice today as well, we also need to learn to listen carefully. We need to listen—not to respond—but to understand. I also understand what Becky said about telling the truth. I have been guilty of this and I know it hurt someone terribly. It was a difficult lesson for me and I still feel badly about it.
Prayer: Gracious God, please help me use my words to spread love and kindness to all. Amen
