A Daily Devotion for Thursday, August 13
Acts 1:4-8
On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 4:12
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
The devotion today is so on point. I especially can relate to this particular sentence: “One day I realized that I am willing to talk to family members and even complete strangers about cookies, but I am hardly ever willing to talk to them about Christ.”
I am afraid to make other people uncomfortable, and even worse afraid to make them angry. But this brings me back to something I have heard many times about sharing our faith. When I share my faith, I should concentrate on sharing what God has done for me, and how I experience Him. I can share how much God means to me, and how I go to Him when I am afraid or in pain, and how much better I feel when I do. I can share how I experience God speaking to me through other beautiful people. There is a lot to share that is not threatening or pushy. I need to remember this.
Holy Lord, today I will try to share more about my relationship with you. It is never too late for me to get better at sharing my faith with others. Practice makes perfect. I am so thankful for your many blessings. Amen

Like the author in today’s upper room, sharing our faith is like sharing a favorite cookie recipe. You do not force it on anyone. You just show your love, share how it helps you, and let them taste the goodness for themselves. Our job is just to share the recipe, not make them bake the cookies. These verses bring up a topic we have talked about before in Transformers, our reluctance to share our faith with others. When we walk with Christ in our daily lives it shows our faith, but is it enough? I wonder many times why this is so difficult. Living in a heavily secular society gives me pause, especially with people I don’t know well. Sometimes I figure this is the last thing they want to hear, but these are the people that need to hear the News the most. Satan is working overtime. I need to do better.

Most of us do not do a very good job of openly sharing our faith with others. I was taught to share by example. Be a good person and people will know why. I know that isn’t so. Most of the people who have shared their faith with me wish to change by beliefs about certain things. I don’t want to be like that. At my age, you would think I would have it figured out. Not so.
Prayer: Gracious God, help me be more open about your love for me and for everyone. AMEN

This morning’s Upper Room contributor has perfectly captured the irony of our reluctance to share our faith. When talking about the cookies, she probably did not try to explain how the cookies came to be, trace the history of the cookies or insist that this is the way all cookies must be made or they should not be eaten. She just loves the cookies and wants others to taste and see how good they are. That’s all that Jesus asks of His followers. We are to be His witnesses, not His historians, biographers or legal counsel. We love Him and that love should move us to urge others to taste and see the goodness of the Lord…
