A Daily Devotion for Monday, July 10

John 17:17

"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."

Jesus prays to the Father for his disciples, knowing his death approaches. I remember a guest pastor many years ago gave a sermon on Easter. She talked about the sadness and dismay of the disciples directly after Jesus' death. Imagine if they had all stayed in that state of paralysis! What if they had not been willing to accept Jesus' resurrection and the Holy Spirit which was sent to guide them? If the disciples had turned away from God in their sadness and discouragement, imagine the outcome! But, fortunately, this is not what happened. God held the disciples and sent His Holy Spirit to keep them inspired. This is the same Spirit which we have been sent- the same powerful inspiration.

Holy Lord, I am thankful today for your gift of the Holy Spirit. May I cherish and utilize this gift. Amen

John 17:17

This is a small part of a long prayer by Jesus before his death. He has done all he can for the disciples, taught them all he knows, and he seems to be turning their future over to God. He is making sure they will remain inspired by what they’ve learned and will go into the world and spread God’s word.

Prayer: gracious God, may I be inspired by the Holy Spirit to always do your work. Amen

John 17:17 When I was a church speaker for the Gideons International, this verse was always featured in my message. The mission of the Gideons is Bible distribution. Active in over 140 countries, distributing Bibles in over 100 languages, this organization relies on the Word of God to act on the hearts and minds of people. There are countless, well-documented testimonies of people coming to faith after an encounter with a Gideon placed Bible in a hotel, prison, hospital or given at a college campus distribution. This has occurred all around the world. Only the Truth can do this. Jesus has told us He is the way, the truth and the life. It is only His Truth that sanctifies.
