A Daily Devotion for Monday, Jan. 4

Colossians 3:1-5

Verse 2: Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.

This Is certainly easier said than done. But sometimes I know I follow the more literal route with this passage and take it to mean I am to spend more time with God, more time in His Word. But today I am thinking about a slightly different application. If I have my eyes and my heart looking up, I will always know who I am following. The earthly things will fall into place, because I will be led by God. My decisions and my actions will better reflect my master if I am looking up to Him.

Holy One, leader of my life, teacher of all good things, be my guide on this earth. I will look to you and you will advise me. Your way is always right. Amen

Colossians 3:1-5

In our neighborhood the electricity goes off with some regularity–any major storm or wind almost certainly will mean a blackout. When the power comes back on, I have to spend quite awhile resetting clocks, radios, televisions, and VCR/DVD players. So this makes me think that my power goes-off pretty regularly. So where do I get the ability to put my own power back on. Setting my mind on the things that are above doesn’t mean to sit around and think about heaven. This is not a one-time-only decision but a decision that needs to be made over and over again. We are called to live in such a way that Christ can be seen in us, and …

20210104 Monday, Daily Devotion - Colossians 3:1-2 (NIV)

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Our decisions are based on our thoughts, minds, and heart. Setting your hearts on things above means to make a decision based on the values and standard above because all the decisions we make are based on our thoughts, minds, and values. We are the people who have high value on the things above rather than on earth. This is a reason why we try to rejoice in something God delights rather than things people love.

Colossians 3: 1-5

2 Set your minds on things above not on earthly things.

I do, at times, have a difficult time just trusting in Jesus. I guess it is in my nature to always feel Jesus needs my help. I should think of this the other way around. I am not in control, Jesus is. Jesus overcame death and saved the world and has given us the chance at eternal life. A wonderful inheritance that is just for us. I just need to let go and only look to Jesus and not by trusting in my own abilities. Jesus leads the way.

Dearest Lord help me to keep my eyes on Jesus and the wonderful gift of eternal life…

Colossians 3:1 - “So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”

“Raised in Christ” - three simple words that convey the profound truth of faith and transform the believer. It reminds me of my chosen life verse, Galatians 2:20. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Dead in sin, I was born again by faith through grace and my sights are on things above rather than the…
