A Daily Devotion for Monday, Feb. 6

Romans 16:17-18

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

Hopefully, as we grow closer to Christ, it becomes easier to discern God's will for us. When faced with a decision moving forward, there may be forces which get in our way, or distract us, or slow us down. Sometimes these things represent Satan getting in our way; maybe in the form of a flatterer, trying to pull us off course, or temptation to take the easy way out. But the stronger my relationship with Christ, the more difficult it will be to pull me off course.

God above, I am thankful for your Holy Spirit, living in me. Help me to stay aware and alert, and on the right path. Amen

Becky, transforming

Romans 16:17–18 From the MESSAGE

One final word of counsel, friends. Keep a sharp eye out for those who take bits and pieces of the teaching that you learned and uses them to make trouble. Give these people a wide berth. They have no intention of living for our master Christ. They’re only in this for what they can get out of it, and aren’t above using Pius sweet talk to dupe unsuspecting innocents.

Upon reading this, two things came to mind – 1. Those who read before and after a particular Bible verse to get a better idea if its meaning and 2. Sound bites. Today’s media world is full of small bits and pieces of a story…

The enemy is the same evil one that comes into our lives and attempts to steal our peace. It tries to kill our hope and destroy all that we have learned from the Bible and believing in Jesus. This evil will attempt to cause disunity within our own churches. As Christians we need to do all we can t…

Romans 16:17-18

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

No doubt all of us have dealt with troublemakers in our lives. Maybe some of us have been troublemakers, causing problems in other people’s lives. Troublemakers are, unfortunately, a part of life. We are going to face them. The question is, what should we do when we encounter them? I admit I have not aways done a good job of recognizing…

1 Thessalonians 5:15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. When I am irritated or angry, I frequently say something that is just as bad or worse than what was done or said to me. I should never attempt to get even. I should be patient with each person, being careful that when we get on each other’s nerves I don’t snap at that person. I should always look for the best in each person and always do what is best to bring that goodness out.

Dearest Lord, give me the patience and grace to always think…
