Ephesians 5:18b-20
Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Here Paul's describes music as a way of communicating to one another as well as praising God. The words and the music together are more meaningful somehow than the words alone. I am still amazed when I think about music at this level. What a beautiful, grace-filled gift from God!
Holy Lord, thank you for the gift of music. It is a mysterious, wonderful thing to be moved by music. I am so thankful! Amen

Written to be sung or chanted, they were not just poetry. We can sing whenever we are together, not just on Sunday morning. It is the best way to offer our praises to God. And for those who think they can’t sing, I love this line. “making music to the Lord in your hearts”.
Prayer: Gracious God, I give many thanks for the gift of music you have given me. Amen
Ephesians 5:18b-20 This is not a commentary on contemporary praise and worship music, but it is a shameless plug for the traditional hymns of the church, particularly in the sense of singing them with others. I may have mentioned having heard a speaker talking about how using these hymns in worship could link us across generations like no modern praise chorus can hope to do. The sense of singing the hymns sung by our parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on creates a sacred bond of familial love as well as shared love of God. There are hymns to this very day that remind me immediately of my parents and that memory is precious.
Prayer - Lord of families and tradition,…
