A Daily Devotion for Friday, November 4

Matthew 1:20

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit."

Matthew 2:13

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."

I will admit, watching "The Chosen" has given me additional ways to understand God's word. Not so much in content, but in a different way that strengthens my belief. For example, we are reminded that Matthew, as a disciple of Jesus, had ample contact with, and opportunities to hear from Jesus (and Mary) the stories surrounding Jesus' birth. So, these happenings were likely described to Matthew at some point. And the text is clear: Joseph was given hugely important information and direction through dreams. So, back to dreams: when God decides to use this form of communication, He will use it. My dreams are such a mess, if I ever had a clear dream with an angel speaking to me, telling me to do something, I would certainly know it was something new. Actually, it would be a great way for God to get my attention!

Holy Lord, I never want to miss communication from you. Speak to me however you wish, lead me, guide me, change me for the better. I will listen. Amen

Matthew 1: 20 and 2:13 Joseph is one of those people I wish we knew more about. We do know more than we think, thanks to Matthew’s recording of Joseph’s two dreams. He was obviously a man of God as he easily understood and acted on these dreams. We will never know if he questioned these requests or simply did as he was told. I would love to know more about his own childhood. He is not mentioned after the story of Jesus staying behind to go to “his fathers house. “We must content ourselves with the knowledge that he raised Jesus well spiritually. We couldn’t ask anymore of him. Prayer: gracious God, in your choice of Mary, Jesus also got a…

Matthew 1:20~~~~~2:13

God spoke to his people through dreams in both old and new testaments. The Old Testament Joseph saw his future in his dreams. In The New Testament Joseph was urged to marry a pregnant maid in a dream, and then he escaped saving that child’s certain death through the warning from another dream. Dreams were powerful ways of communication throughout Scripture, and God still uses our dreams today.

God is the same today as He was yesterday. Wouldn't it be wonderful to actually hearing Him whisper words into my heart? When I’m worried or confused, I would love to hear how He wants me to respond. The Bible teaches that we are told …

Matthew 1:20, 2:13

This morning’s reading is the flip side (would a teenager today know what that means?) of the Deuteronomy reading from yesterday. The dreams Joseph experienced were indeed from God and he had the faith to heed their instruction. As a laborer, Joseph may not have had the comprehensive knowledge of Scripture to sense that what he and Mary were going through was the fulfillment of what the prophets had foretold, yet he felt compelled to obey and history pivoted on his obedience. How would I respond if visited by an angel in a dream? Has this already happened? Was my response one of obedience?

Prayer - Almighty God, You who have the power to speak to Your…
