verses 31b-32: “If you abide in My word you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
Jesus tells “those Jews who believed Him”, following Him will set them free. I can see how that would be confusing, for one who had never been a slave to another. But Jesus is not talking about that kind of slavery. As a person who has spent a lot of time in an anxious, worried state of mind, I can find huge comfort in these words. Following Jesus helps me to avoid sin, but also allows me the peace of knowing Jesus has “got my back“ for eternity. This can make me feel as light as a feather! That’s freedom!
Father God, I am so thankful to you for all of your comfort and peace, which you cover me with like a blanket. You are generous beyond all understanding. I am yours. Amen
