A Daily Devotion for Friday February 2

1 John 3:1-2.

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should becalled children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

I think of God as my creator, and my very source of breath and life. And I know God as my spiritual Father, but don't often think about just what that means. My own father was quiet and kind, but with a safe temper. He was rather predictable, and could be counted on to follow through. Is this the kind of father God is to me? Certainly as a child of God, I can count on Him to provide for me just like my own father did. But I know there is much more to this relationship than our worldly ones. This will take more thought and discernment on my part to better understand.

Holy Lord, you are my ultimate Father, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Predictable in some ways, yet always doing something new with me. I am so thankful; help me, Lord, to better understand all you are to me. Amen

1 John 3:1-2

Of course, if he is our Father, (as we often pray) then we are his children. I first heard the phrase, “a child of God” referring to myself when I was a young teen. It didn’t mean as much to me then as it does today. What comfort it is to be part of this large family of believers. I see now why some denominations use the term Brother or Sister in Christ.

Prayer: Gracious God, Thank you for this large family you have offered me. Amen

1John 3:1-2

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

These scripture verses tells us about the love God has for us. Not only is He willing to call us His children, we actually are His children. Some of that transformation is immediate, but everything we will have  still has to be revealed. Only…

1 John 3:1-2

Being known as a child of God affords us no special status in the world. In some places, and increasingly here in our own country, it can be viewed negatively. John tells us the reason. Herein lies a dilemma. If they are hostile because they do not know God themselves, does the Holy Spirit want to use us to help make an introduction? Part of our identity as Christians is having a desire to increase the family of faith.

Prayer - Open my heart, Lord, to be willing to make known to others the eternal benefits of being Your child. As they come to know You, they will also come to know peace and we will meet…
