John 15:11
“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”
“Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be alright and the determined choice to praise God in every situation.” This is a quote from Rick Warren, and to me it sums up what joy really can be, in our truest, purest, experience.
Today’s scripture is taken from Jesus’ words to his disciples. He is preparing them for their future on earth without him physically at their side. We have never had Jesus physically at our side. But the knowledge that He is in us and with us always is what can give us joy no matter what is happening. This is certainly easier said than done. But when I feel my life is becoming dry, unhappy, or lacking in positives, the first thing I should do is go to God in prayer and draw closer to Him. I do think Rick Warren was right: ‘ultimately everything is going to be alright’ with God.
Holy Lord, Joy comes from you, and the knowledge that you are in control. When I have a moment full of joy, I thank you. The experience of joy is a gift from you, and I am thankful. Amen

John 15:11
John 15:1-17 has Jesus teaching his disciples and us many things, not the least of which is love. And it is this love that will bring us joy. Love each other, teach each other, help each other, and stay close to God. This is what will bring us overflowing joy. We all try our best. We read His word, worship together, and share with each other. I know that all of this makes me feel good but not always overflowing with joy. I’m sure I still have much to learn.
Prayer: Gracious God, help me feel the overflowing joy you speak of. Amen

John 15:11
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete
Stressed out and worried would more likely describe me most of the time. But the Bible says that the joy of the lord is my strength. Knowing this I could continually experience joy so why don’t I. I have to remember that Joy comes through faith, that is believing God. it comes from seeing and knowing Jesus as Lord. It comes from fellow believers who work hard to help me focus on these sources of joy, rather than depressing circumstances. When I really pay attention to the happenings in my life, and knowin…
John 15:11
Jesus has just told His disciples about abiding in His love. This intense relationship brings joy to both Jesus and those who abide in His love. The word “abide” means acceptance and accordance to a rule or system. Far from limiting what is naively thought of as freedom by skeptics, abiding in Jesus keeps us from making harmful choices and represents freedom from the power of sin. This is the essence of joy which can be present even in difficult circumstances.
Prayer - Jesus, my goal is to abide in You so that You abide in me. It is our relationship that makes joy possible and makes joy complete. Amen.
