A Daily Devotion for Thursday, December 17

1Samuel 2:1-10

Luke 1:46-55

Luke 1:48-49 ...for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me- holy is his name.
 

We have been talking a lot about Mary in our Advent study group. One of the recurring questions is, how much did Mary understand about what was happening to her and about who Jesus was and what would happen to him? These lines of scripture are interesting when read in that context. Mary knows she is being blessed beyond measure. But she also knows this blessing will be remembered for “all generations“. This brings me closer again to the reverence of Mary practiced in the Catholic Church. Mary may have been an ordinary peasant girl before she was visited by the angel, but she was never ordinary after that.
 

Holy One, you chose Mary to bear your son. She was your holy choice. Help me, God, to understand more fully what I can learn from her. Amen
